Belfry of Comines

Belfry of Comines

Description

"Destroyed by the German army in 1918, the belfry was rebuilt almost identically by the famous architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier. He then benefited from modern techniques, a reinforced concrete frame replacing the wood frame of yesteryear. Its base is a massive tower alternating brick and white stone but its originality is based on its huge dome above the walkway. We discover an amazing baroque campanile covered in slate composed of an 11 meter high bulb and two superimposed lanterns. The second, thinner and slender, supports a wind vane. The belfry can not be visited. "
