Belfry of Bethune

Belfry of Bethune

Description

Symbol of the medieval and contemporary history of Bethune, the Belfry overlooks the city. Located on the Grand'Place, it is the geographical, political, historical, cultural and emotional center of the city. Among its many functions, it should be remembered that makes it an ideal point of observation to scrutinize the surrounding countryside and prevent danger. The Belfry of Bethune also incarnates in the name of history the municipal franchises of the city, these customary freedoms granted to the bourgeois by the Counts of Artois. It is the symbol of Nord-Pas de Calais: the silhouette of the belfry Bethune was indeed chosen by the General Council to serve as a logo for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Region. Witness of the history of the city, the belfry is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover the lighting of the belfry and Grand'Place by Krijn de Koning.
